Jennifer's May Marvels '07

Milan — Jennifer Castoldi reflects, “If there is ever a time to get hooked on Italy’s finest caffe, Milan Design Week is it.” Events run from 9am through to the wee hours of the morning. Even if one were to have super human strength to whirl through the exhibition and the 350+ external events, 24 hours spanning the life of the event still proves for an overwhelming schedule. Here within learn more about the design happenings and see some of the bedding picks from the show.

Could it be? Wood it be?

Multiple European Cities — We continually invent new gadgets and gizmos to help make our lives easier, but do they really? How often have you cursed “the latest” time-saving device for breaking up and slowing you down? By using new technologies to create rustic yet endurable pieces, designers are taking us back to our roots. Literally.

Timeless & Trendy

Multiple Scandinavian Cities — Scandinavian textiles are unmistakable -- timeless and classic yet beautifully and simply modern. The “brand” of Scandinavian textiles is one of the strongest in the world. Be they from large companies such as IKEA to smaller individual designers, the patterns are instantly identified with that region. Although these designs are inspired by ideas from around the world, they continue to have a similar feel, a common aesthetic thread. See the latest timeless and trendy textiles here!

Musical Sofas & Trends

Multiple European Cities — One of the most challenging things to do during the design week in Milan is to get up after sitting down. This year Trendease did a lot of sitting; not sitting to relax, but rather playing musical chairs with new product launches. The Salone del Mobile and the offsite events kept us in perpetual motion. While testing how well the latest upholstery contoured to our derrières we also contemplated the latest trends now included in this feature with over 50 new pieces!

NASA approved!

Inspirational Revolutions

Multiple European Cities — Undoubtedly there are a myriad of upholstered chair models on the market. This feature highlights some of the most innovative creations as well as some more conservative, yet well-designed pieces available. It is also quite fun to learn about chairs inspired by pasta, bread, cream, and NASA! This feature parallels the trends in the feature “Musical Sofas & Trends” and it also has some special factoids and images itself.

The Growing Bulb

Sydney — Julie Lantry, founder of Bulb boutique, is in tune to what a girl wants when it comes to a little self-indulgence. The boutique itself is a haven from the hectic world of nine-to-five. It is a reminiscent of your best-friend’s bedroom. This bulb is a growing one; founded in Sydney, Australia, it is now branching out internationally, beginning with its exclusive line in London and its online offerings.

Love to Work

Paris — If one has to spend all day in the office behind a desk one wants to do so comfortably and if at all possible stylishly. Trendease pulled these products found in Milan together to create an environment where one would love to work. The designs are well thought out and are the freshest office pieces available.

Set the Table for Tomorrow

Multiple European Cities — Set the table with the latest tabletop inventions. See how a dining table can be interactive art! Have the hottest place setting in town with tea light pots, credit card cutlery, topography dishes, modern lace, orecchitta pasta creations, porcelain flatware, and more. New Talent: Tin + Aluminum = Diamond

Milan — The 2007 edition of SaloneSatellite was yet again another fine place to find burgeoning talent. In its 10th edition the exhibit has stuck to its laurels. Traditional and modern products could be found within the stands. Wall treatments, a play on form, blobular styles, unique bookshelves, and products laced together were evident trends at hand.

EcoChic: Hot & Cool Initiative

Milan — Increasing temperatures have broken records across Europe this spring and has people increasingly worried about global warming and the state of the planet. In response, designers are bucking the trend of disposability and looking for sustainable ways to enrich the home environment and to maximize every available resource. The hot designs presented during the Milan Furniture Fair 2007 will help us to cool off this summer.

Halle — Not many people think of design shops as zooming, but all of that will change once this mobile shop is reviewed. As a collaborative, students from the Interior Design and Industrial Design departments of the University of Art and Design in Halle, Germany, created their own shop in the ground floor of the castle Biebichstein. All products were displayed in ten liter buckets inlaid within the wall. This concept has now hit the street. During designmai the burgshop was on tour.
